Workflow adapter

A component that controls approval and lifecycle steps in identity management.

A workflow adapter is the component in an identity management system that connects approval logic to account and entitlement changes. It decides how a request moves through a lifecycle, such as joiner, mover, leaver, role assignment, or access review, and it can trigger human approvals, automated checks, or provisioning actions.

In cyber security, workflow adapters matter because they enforce the rules that separate ordinary users from privileged changes. If an adapter is misconfigured or bypassed, an attacker may be able to request access, approve their own changes, or push unauthorized updates into downstream systems. In practice, defenders review these adapters carefully, because a flaw here can turn a small authorization issue into full identity compromise. Secure deployments limit who can modify workflows, validate every approval step, log all state transitions, and test that scripting or custom extensions cannot skip controls.
