Worker control is the ability of employees or their representatives to understand, limit, and govern how workplace data is collected, analyzed, shared, and retained. In cyber security, it matters because cameras, wearables, sensors, and AI systems can turn ordinary operations into high-value telemetry: location, behavior, schedules, and safety events.
Strong worker control is a defense against surveillance creep and data abuse. It usually means clear notice, narrow purpose limits, role-based access, logging, retention controls, and ways to challenge or disable unnecessary collection. If these controls are weak, attackers or abusive insiders can misuse monitoring systems to build profiles, exfiltrate sensitive workplace data, or track people beyond the original safety purpose. Good governance keeps predictive tools useful without turning safety infrastructure into a broad monitoring platform.
