Wire fraud

A scheme to defraud that uses interstate wire communications in furtherance of the fraud.

Wire fraud is a criminal scheme to deceive someone for money, data, or other value using interstate wire communications to carry it out. In practice, the “wire” part can include email, web forms, messaging apps, phone calls, payment portals, or other networked services that move information across state or national lines. Cybersecurity teams care about the term because many online scams are built around it: the attacker tricks a victim into sending credentials, approving a payment, or revealing sensitive data.

In real attacks, wire fraud often appears alongside phishing, account takeover, and social engineering. A fake login page may capture a password, then the attacker uses that access to steal messages, private files, or recovery details. Defenses focus on reducing trust in unsolicited prompts, using phishing-resistant authentication such as passkeys, reviewing active sessions, and preserving logs and message trails for investigation. The legal label matters because it helps link the technical abuse of online systems to the fraudulent intent behind it.
