WinSock

Microsoft’s Windows Sockets networking interface, used by applications and system components for network communication.

WinSock, short for Windows Sockets, is Microsoft’s networking interface for Windows applications and many system components. It provides the standard way software opens connections, sends and receives data, and works with network protocols such as TCP and UDP.

In cyber security, WinSock matters because it sits close to the network stack and is widely used across Windows environments. Bugs in WinSock-related code can affect many programs at once, and flaws in adjacent drivers or components may be reachable from the network or through other local processes. Attackers look for these weaknesses to gain remote code execution, intercept traffic, or disrupt communications. Defenders treat WinSock issues as high priority because they often affect exposed servers, endpoint agents, and infrastructure tools. Monitoring unusual socket activity, patching affected Windows components quickly, and limiting unnecessary network exposure all help reduce risk.
