Windows service

A background component that can run independently of a user session and may hold elevated rights.

A Windows service is a background program that runs without a user logging in and often starts automatically at boot. Services commonly handle updates, networking, device support, or other system tasks, and they may run under powerful accounts such as Local System or a dedicated service account. Because they operate outside an interactive desktop session, services can keep working even when no one is signed in.

In cyber security, services matter because their privileges and trust boundaries are high-value targets. A flaw in a service can lead to local privilege escalation, persistence, or code execution with elevated rights. Attackers may try to abuse service permissions, weak file paths, unsafe command-line handling, or overly trusting inputs. Defenders harden services by applying least privilege, restricting who can modify service files and settings, patching promptly, and monitoring for unusual service-started processes or changes in service configuration.
