Wi-Fi discovery

The scanning and signaling behavior devices use to find nearby wireless networks.

Wi-Fi discovery is the process a device uses to search for nearby wireless networks and decide which ones it can join. This includes sending probe requests, listening for beacon frames, and learning network names, capabilities, and signal strength. The behavior is normal and necessary for connectivity, but it also reveals useful metadata about the device.

In cyber security, Wi-Fi discovery matters because aggressive scanning can leak presence, location clues, preferred networks, and timing patterns. Attackers can use that information to profile users, track movement, or set up rogue access points that mimic trusted networks. Defenders reduce exposure by limiting background scans, hiding sensitive network identifiers, tightening connection prompts, and monitoring for unusual probe activity. Good Wi-Fi discovery controls help protect privacy before any password or encrypted session is involved.
