White-label

Hardware made by one company and sold under another brand name.

White-label hardware is made by one company and then sold under another brand name. In networking, that can mean the box on the shelf, the web interface, and even the firmware support path may not come from the company whose logo is on the case.

This matters because security depends on provenance: defenders need to know who built the device, who customized it, and who can update it. A white-label router may hide shared hardware and software across many brands, which can blur accountability and make it harder to verify whether firmware is trustworthy. In attacks, that ambiguity can let hidden access paths or undocumented management functions go unnoticed; in defense, it pushes organizations to validate firmware, inventory models carefully, and test whether exposed services match expectations rather than marketing labels.
