WebUI

A browser-based interface used to manage or configure a device.

A WebUI is a browser-based management interface built into a device, appliance, or embedded system. It lets an administrator view status, change settings, upload firmware, and perform maintenance tasks without using a local console or special client software.

WebUIs matter in cyber security because they are often the easiest way to reach the management plane, which is usually more privileged than normal device functions. If a WebUI has weak authentication, poor session handling, unsafe file upload, or bugs in its web server code, an attacker may be able to crash the device, expose information, bypass login, or even change configuration remotely. Defenders treat WebUIs as high-value targets: they restrict network exposure, require strong credentials and role-based access control, keep firmware updated, and monitor for unexpected requests. In industrial and embedded environments, protecting the WebUI can be as important as protecting the device itself.
