A web-managed switch is a network switch that administrators configure through a browser-based management interface instead of only through a command line or console port. This makes it easier to change VLANs, ports, and security settings, but it also creates a management surface that must be protected like any other administrative service.
In cyber security, web-managed switches matter because attackers who reach the interface may be able to read configuration data, discover internal network topology, or change settings to support later intrusion. A weakness in the web interface can turn a basic networking device into a source of credentials and reconnaissance data. Defenders should restrict access to trusted management hosts, use strong authentication, keep firmware patched, and monitor for unusual HTTP or configuration activity. Treating switch management as part of the security perimeter helps prevent small administrative flaws from becoming broad network exposure.
