Web-facing infrastructure

Publicly reachable services and applications exposed to the internet.

Web-facing infrastructure is the set of public services and applications exposed directly to the internet, such as portals, login pages, APIs, and remote-access gateways. Because these systems sit on the edge of an organization, they are often the first place attackers probe for weak passwords, unpatched software, misconfigurations, or flaws in authentication and session handling.

In cyber security, this layer matters because it can connect outsiders to trusted internal systems. A compromise of a public portal may not be the real end goal; attackers may use it to steal credentials, pivot into internal networks, abuse integrations, or reach sensitive workflows. Defenders reduce this risk with strong patching, multi-factor authentication, strict access control, segmentation, logging, and continuous monitoring of exposed assets. For critical infrastructure, the main lesson is simple: if the web edge is weak, the trust chain behind it can be at risk.
