Web-accessible directory

A server path that can be reached through a browser and may serve files directly to the public.

A web-accessible directory is a server folder that the web server can expose through a browser URL. If a file is placed there, users may be able to download it or, in some cases, the server may execute it as code. That makes the directory a critical trust boundary between uploaded content and active web content.

In cyber security, these directories matter because many attacks begin with file upload abuse. If an application accepts a file and stores it in a public path, an attacker may try to upload a PHP script, web shell, or other malicious content. Defenders reduce this risk by storing uploads outside the document root, blocking script execution in upload folders, and checking for unexpected new files or changes. A public directory is not dangerous by itself, but unsafe handling of files in it can turn a normal feature into a backdoor path.
