Wearable tech

Technology built for body-worn use in everyday settings.

Wearable tech is technology built to be worn on the body in everyday settings, such as smartwatches, fitness bands, medical sensors, and smart glasses. In cyber security, wearables matter because they often collect sensitive personal data, stay connected to phones or cloud services, and use wireless links such as Bluetooth. That combination can expose location, health, voice, or movement data if pairing, authentication, or app permissions are weak.

Wearables also create practical defense challenges. Many devices have limited battery, storage, and processing power, so security controls must be lightweight but still protect firmware, communications, and stored data. Attackers may target companion apps, stolen devices, insecure update channels, or nearby wireless traffic. Defenders look for encrypted connections, signed updates, secure boot, strong pairing, and minimal data collection. As body-worn hardware becomes more flexible and discreet, the security goal is not just making it work, but making it safe to wear and hard to misuse.
