VPN trust model

The set of technical and organizational controls a user relies on when sending traffic through a VPN provider.

A VPN trust model is the set of technical and organizational assumptions a user accepts when routing traffic through a VPN provider. It defines what the provider can see, what it promises not to store, and how much confidence users place in the client software, server infrastructure, logging policy, and audit process.

This matters because a VPN does not remove trust; it shifts it. The provider may be able to observe connection metadata, DNS requests, or traffic patterns unless strong controls are in place. In attacks, a weak trust model can mean data retention, compromised servers, or a provider that silently changes its practices. Defenses include open-source clients, independent no-log audits, minimal logging, transparent policies, and hardened infrastructure. Even then, a VPN mainly reduces network-level exposure and does not protect against endpoint compromise or all forms of tracking.
