Virtual key

A scoped access key used to grant limited access through the gateway.

A virtual key is a scoped access credential used by an API gateway to grant limited, controlled access to downstream services. Instead of acting like a full administrator secret, it usually applies only to specific models, projects, users, budgets, or rate limits.

In AI gateways such as LiteLLM, virtual keys help separate operational control from everyday API use. This matters because a leaked virtual key should not expose the whole control plane. Security teams use them to enforce least privilege, track usage, rotate credentials, and reduce blast radius if a key is copied or abused. In attacks, criminals often look for weak gateway secrets, then try to create or misuse keys that bypass policy. In defense, tightly scoped virtual keys make it easier to detect abnormal spending, block unauthorized model access, and limit damage from a compromised application.
