virtio-fs is a filesystem sharing layer that lets a virtual machine or sandbox read and write host files through a mediated path. Instead of exposing the host filesystem directly, the guest talks to a host-side service that translates file operations across the boundary.
In cyber security, that mediation layer is part of the trust boundary. If path checks, symlink handling, or file reopening are implemented incorrectly, a guest may escape its intended workspace and reach sensitive host data. Attackers look for these bugs because shared filesystems often handle privileged access on behalf of isolated code. Defenders care about virtio-fs because secure configuration and careful boundary checks determine whether a sandbox remains isolated. Using stricter workspace modes, limiting read-write mounts, and promptly patching the host-side filesystem server reduce the risk of boundary-breakout flaws.
