Viewability is a measurement of whether an advertisement was actually visible on a screen, not just delivered by an ad server. An ad can be counted as served, loaded, or requested without ever appearing in the user’s viewport long enough to be seen. In practice, viewability focuses on real on-screen exposure: the ad must render in a visible area, for a measurable duration, and at an effective size.
In cyber security and adtech, viewability matters because it helps separate legitimate attention from fake or wasted traffic. Fraudsters may use hidden iframes, ad stacking, off-screen placements, or automated browsing to inflate impressions while avoiding human visibility. Defenders and auditors compare browser-side signals, viewport data, and timing against server logs to detect manipulation. Strong viewability measurement supports anti-fraud controls, better budget allocation, and more reliable campaign analytics.
