Video surveillance

Camera-based recording that can capture identifiable people, locations, and behavior.

Video surveillance is camera-based recording used to observe people, places, and events. In security programs it can support physical protection, incident review, and access control, but it also creates personal data that must be handled carefully because faces, license plates, routines, and locations can be identified from the footage.

In cyber security, video surveillance matters because cameras are often networked devices with credentials, firmware, and remote access paths that can be attacked like other connected systems. Weak passwords, exposed management ports, or poorly secured cloud accounts can let intruders view or copy live feeds and archives. Defenders should limit access, encrypt recordings, log retrievals, and apply retention and redaction rules so footage is available for investigation without becoming an unnecessary privacy liability.
