Video Processing Unit (VPU)

A specialized component that handles video-related processing on a device.

A Video Processing Unit is a specialized hardware block, sometimes paired with firmware and drivers, that handles video-related tasks such as decoding, encoding, scaling, and frame processing. Offloading these operations from the main CPU improves performance and power use, which is why VPUs are common in phones, tablets, and other connected devices.

In cyber security, a VPU matters because specialized hardware is part of the attack surface. Flaws in the VPU, its firmware, or the driver stack can sometimes be used to crash a device, leak data, or cross privilege boundaries. Attackers may target these components through malformed media files, apps that invoke video APIs, or compromised system services. Defenders reduce risk by keeping device firmware and OS patches current, because security fixes often close vulnerabilities in these lower-level subsystems before they can be chained into broader compromise.
