VHS (Video Home System) is an analog videocassette format used to record and play back video on magnetic tape. Unlike modern digital media, VHS stores signals as continuous analog waveforms, so playback quality depends on tape condition, head alignment, and timing stability. It is not a native cybersecurity storage medium, but it matters because security teams still encounter VHS in legacy archives, evidence rooms, and old surveillance systems.
In cyber security, VHS is relevant for physical media handling and data recovery. A tape may contain sensitive footage, meeting recordings, or system output from older equipment, but it cannot be indexed, encrypted, or searched like a file. Defenders must treat it as removable physical media: protect it from tampering, clone it during forensic work, and securely dispose of obsolete assets. Attackers may also exploit assumptions about “harmless old tape” to hide information or bypass modern digital controls.
