Verification-first scanning

A method that checks whether a found secret is still active before treating it as urgent.

Verification-first scanning is a secrets-detection approach that checks whether a discovered credential is still valid before raising it as a high-priority alert. Instead of treating every match as an emergency, the scanner may test the token, key, or password against the target service or use other validation signals to confirm live exposure.

This matters because secret scanners often produce false positives from stale, revoked, or example values. By confirming liveness, defenders can focus on secrets that still provide access and reduce noise in CI pipelines, code review tools, and public-source monitoring. In real defenses, this helps teams triage faster and decide whether immediate rotation, revocation, or containment is needed. In attacks, an active secret is far more valuable than a dead one, so verification helps separate low-risk findings from credentials that can still be abused.
