Verifiable proof

Documentation or data that can be checked to support a stated claim.

Verifiable proof is documentation or data that can be independently checked to support a claim. In cyber security, this means evidence such as logs, timestamps, packet captures, signed records, screenshots with metadata, or forensic artifacts that let another analyst confirm what happened and when. The key property is not just that the evidence exists, but that it can be validated against a reliable source or chain of custody.

It matters because security teams, auditors, and incident responders often need to prove exposure, compromise, remediation, or compliance. Attackers also exploit the absence of verifiable proof by denying activity, deleting traces, or planting misleading artifacts. Defenders reduce that risk by centralizing logs, preserving originals, using cryptographic hashes, and correlating multiple sources before drawing conclusions. In practice, verifiable proof turns a suspicion into a defensible finding.
