VeraCrypt is an open-source encryption tool used to protect disks, partitions, and file containers. It can encrypt an entire drive or create a virtual encrypted volume that behaves like a normal file until it is mounted with the correct password or key file. The goal is simple: make stored data unreadable to anyone without authorized access.
In cyber security, VeraCrypt matters because it protects data at rest on laptops, removable media, and backups. It is useful against device theft, loss, and offline forensic access. In real attacks, adversaries usually do not try to break the encryption itself; they target weak passwords, exposed recovery material, or an unlocked system. Defenders use VeraCrypt to reduce the impact of endpoint compromise, but they must also manage recovery, key storage, and user access carefully, especially in larger environments where centralized control is limited.
