Vendor support is the maintenance a manufacturer provides for a product or feature. It can include software updates, security patches, bug fixes, documentation, and the backend services that keep a connected function working. In cyber security, vendor support matters because a supported product is more likely to receive fixes for newly discovered vulnerabilities and better guidance for secure use.
Attackers often benefit when support ends. Unpatched devices, expired services, and abandoned features can become easier to abuse, especially if they still connect to the internet or rely on cloud accounts. Defenders should treat support lifecycles as part of asset management: track end-of-support dates, review what functions depend on vendor infrastructure, and replace or isolate products that no longer receive maintenance. Vendor support is not just convenience; it is part of a device’s security posture.
