Vendor certification

A formal approval process that checks whether a provider meets required security or compliance standards.

Vendor certification is a formal approval process used to verify that a cloud provider, software supplier, or service integrator meets defined security, privacy, or compliance requirements. Certification can cover controls such as identity management, encryption, logging, incident response, physical security, and data handling rules. In practice, it helps buyers compare vendors against a common baseline instead of relying only on marketing claims.

In cyber security, certification matters because many breaches start with weak third-party controls, not direct attacks on the core network. A certified vendor is expected to support auditability and safer procurement, which is especially important in sovereign cloud programs and other regulated environments. Defenders use certification to reduce supply-chain risk and enforce standards before systems are connected. Attackers, meanwhile, often exploit gaps between certification paperwork and real-world operations, such as missing logs, overprivileged access, or outdated configurations. Certification is useful only when it is backed by testing, monitoring, and periodic review.
