Vector indexing is a way to organize embeddings, which are numeric representations of text, code, images, or other data, so similar items can be found quickly. Instead of comparing every embedding in a large collection, a retrieval system uses an index to narrow the search to likely matches and reduce compute.
In cyber security, vector indexing matters because modern search, detection, and assistant systems often rely on retrieval over logs, documents, malware samples, or threat intelligence. A good index can speed up incident response queries, improve analyst workflows, and lower cloud cost. Attackers may abuse similar retrieval pipelines to search stolen data or to help malicious chatbots answer more effectively, while defenders use the same technique for semantic search, alert triage, and knowledge base lookup. Its main value is making large-scale similarity search fast enough to be practical.
