Vector data is a numerical representation of content, such as text, images, or documents, that AI systems use for similarity search and retrieval. Instead of matching exact words, the system compares vectors to find items that are semantically close, which is how retrieval-augmented applications surface relevant context quickly.
In cyber security, vector data matters because it can be a core operational asset, not just a byproduct. If attackers corrupt, delete, or encrypt it, search quality and AI-assisted workflows can break even when the model itself is intact. In real attacks, targeting vector databases or embedded indexes can create pressure on organizations that rely on AI assistants, knowledge search, or customer support systems. Defenders should protect vector stores with strong access control, backups, integrity checks, and separation from general-purpose files, since recovery may be harder than restoring ordinary business data.
