VDDK is the VMware Virtual Disk Development Kit, a toolkit that lets software read, copy, and manipulate VMware virtual disks. It is commonly used by migration utilities, backup products, and storage integration tools that need to work with VMDK files without booting the guest machine. In practice, VDDK acts as a helper library for agentless operations on virtual disks.
In cyber security, VDDK matters because migration and backup workflows are part of the trusted infrastructure layer. If a tool depends on VDDK, a missing package, blocked download, or unsupported version can stop a cutover, break recovery automation, or force teams onto less secure manual methods. Attackers may also benefit when operators rely on fragile tooling, because delays and fallback paths can weaken change control. Defenders should inventory every dependency, verify supported distribution sources, test alternatives such as built-in importers or storage-level copy methods, and treat virtualization tooling as critical infrastructure rather than convenience software.
