vCenter is VMware’s central management platform for ESXi hosts, clusters, virtual machines, and related infrastructure. Instead of administering each host separately, operators use vCenter to configure workloads, apply policies, monitor inventory, and automate actions across the environment.
In cyber security, vCenter is high value because it sits on the management plane. An attacker who compromises it can often see more, control more, and move faster than on a single host. That makes vCenter attractive for privilege escalation, mass disruption, and stealthy persistence. Defenders treat it as a crown-jewel system: restrict access, enforce strong authentication, segment it from general user networks, monitor administrative actions, and patch it quickly. If vCenter is exposed or weakly protected, the rest of the virtual estate becomes much easier to target.
