Update rings

Staged rollout groups that limit how many devices receive an update before wider promotion.

Update rings are staged rollout groups used to deliver software patches or configuration changes to a small set of devices first, then expand to larger groups only after the initial ring looks healthy. This lets administrators test compatibility, service stability, and rollback behavior before the update reaches the whole fleet.

In cyber security, update rings matter because they reduce blast radius. A flawed patch, bad driver, or broken policy can disrupt systems quickly if it is pushed everywhere at once. With rings, defenders can define success criteria, monitor for crashes or failed installs, and stop promotion if problems appear. Attackers may also target the update process itself by trying to compromise trusted update channels, which makes controlled rollout and verification important defenses against supply-chain and deployment failures.
