An unlock timer is a countdown displayed alongside files or links, often in an extortion post. It may suggest that content will become accessible after a set period, but the timer alone does not establish what the files contain, whether they are genuine, or whether the link will work.
In cyber security, a countdown can create urgency and reputational pressure before a claim has been verified. Defenders should treat it as an unconfirmed signal: preserve relevant evidence, review internal logs, and validate any exposed data independently. Do not assume that a timed release proves a breach or successful data theft.
