Unauthorized disclosure is the release or exposure of information without the permission of its owner or lawful authority. It can happen when someone deliberately shares data, or when weak access controls, misconfigured systems, compromised accounts, or third-party workflows allow others to see or obtain it.
In cybersecurity investigations, finding records online may show that information is available, but it does not alone establish how it left authorized control or who disclosed it. Defenders trace provenance by preserving audit logs, reviewing access and transfer events, identifying affected data, and checking systems and service providers. Confirming whether disclosure occurred—and its scope—helps guide containment, notifications, and measures against follow-on phishing or identity misuse.
