Transient error

A temporary failure that may succeed on retry once the service recovers.

A transient error is a temporary failure that can clear on its own or succeed when a request is retried. It is common in distributed systems, where brief outages, overload, network hiccups, rate limits, or backend restarts can interrupt an otherwise healthy service.

In cyber security, transient errors matter because attackers and defenders both have to distinguish short-lived instability from a real compromise or persistent outage. A spike in retryable server errors may indicate capacity pressure, a failing dependency, or defensive controls such as throttling and WAF filtering. In attacks, transient failures can be used to hide noisy probing, trigger fail-open behavior, or stress a service until it degrades. In defenses, bounded retries, backoff, logging, and fallback modes help applications recover without overwhelming the target. The key is to retry intelligently: a transient error may pass, but repeated failures should be treated as a signal that the problem is deeper.
