Transaction monitoring is the use of rules, models, and alerts to spot unusual payment activity for review. It looks for patterns such as sudden spikes in volume, transfers to new or high-risk accounts, repeated small payments, rapid in-and-out movement, or behavior that does not match a customer’s normal profile.
In cyber security and financial crime defense, it matters because fraud often continues after the initial compromise or scam. Attackers may try to move stolen funds through multiple accounts, payment services, or intermediaries to hide the source of the money. Effective monitoring helps banks, payment processors, and compliance teams interrupt that flow, freeze suspect activity, and preserve evidence for investigators. It is not proof of crime by itself, but it is one of the main ways defenders detect laundering, account takeover abuse, and mule activity early enough to limit losses.
