Training fidelity

how closely a learning tool reflects the real conditions of the task being taught.

Training fidelity is the degree to which a learning environment matches the real task it is meant to teach. In cyber security, high-fidelity training preserves the details that matter in practice: realistic alerts, believable social-engineering cues, actual command-line behavior, or the timing and pressure of an incident. Low-fidelity training can still teach concepts, but it may hide the mistakes people make when a situation feels urgent or messy.

This matters because attackers exploit gaps between practice and reality. A phishing exercise that looks too artificial may not prepare staff for convincing lures, while a tabletop drill that skips real logs or tools may fail to train responders on actual workflows. Defenders use training fidelity to build muscle memory for triage, reporting, containment, and verification. The goal is not perfect simulation; it is enough realism to teach decision-making without exposing systems to unnecessary risk.
