Traffic analysis

Examining network patterns to spot coordination, reuse, or unusual behavior.

Traffic analysis is the examination of network activity patterns rather than just message contents. Analysts look at timing, volume, source diversity, request sequences, session length, and reuse of technical traits to infer whether traffic is normal, automated, or coordinated. Even when attackers encrypt data or rotate IP addresses, the pattern of communication can still reveal relationships between clients.

In cyber security, traffic analysis helps defenders detect bot activity, scraping, credential stuffing, command-and-control beacons, and other abuse that blends into legitimate usage. Repeated timing, synchronized bursts, identical navigation paths, or similar browser behavior can show that many “users” are actually one managed operation. It also supports defense by highlighting anomalies that IP reputation alone may miss, such as large groups of sessions that appear distributed across regions but still share control signals. Used well, traffic analysis turns network behavior into a source of evidence for hunting, filtering, and risk scoring.
