Tool triggering

The act of initiating an external action, such as an API call or workflow step, from an agent system.

Tool triggering is the act of causing an agent system to start an external action, such as an API request, database query, file operation, or workflow step. In many AI systems, the model decides when a tool should be used, then the runtime executes that action. The trigger point is important because it is where a harmless text response becomes a real side effect.

In cyber security, tool triggering matters because every triggered tool can move data, send messages, or change systems. If attackers can influence the trigger logic, they may force unauthorized actions even without changing the model output. Defenses should therefore enforce allowlists, schema checks, destination validation, and explicit approval in the orchestration layer. Security teams treat tool triggering as a privileged boundary: if the model is bypassed or the gate is weak, guardrails alone may not stop abuse.
