Tool orchestration

The coordination of multiple tools or actions by an automated system or agent.

Tool orchestration is the coordination of multiple tools, actions, or services by an automated system or agent to complete a task. Instead of doing everything itself, the system decides which tool to call, in what order, and with what inputs. In AI agents, this can include terminal commands, APIs, databases, memory stores, and workflow steps.

In cyber security, tool orchestration matters because it turns a model from a text generator into an action layer. If permissions are too broad, an attacker can abuse the orchestration layer to chain reconnaissance, command execution, data access, and persistence with little human oversight. Defenders look for unusual tool sequences, repeated permission requests, or commands that do not match the stated task. Good protection means least privilege, approval gates for risky actions, strong logging, and clear separation between reasoning and execution. Properly controlled, orchestration can help automate safe response; poorly controlled, it can amplify an attack.
