Token Authentication

A login method that requires a secret token before a service accepts requests.

Token authentication is a login and request-validation method where a client must present a secret token before a service will accept its requests. The token may be a static secret, an API key, or a short-lived credential issued after initial login. The server checks the token on each request to decide whether the caller is trusted.

In cyber security, token authentication matters because exposed management or API endpoints are often probed by attackers first. If a service accepts commands without a valid token, it can become an easy target for unauthorized access, data theft, or remote code execution. Defenders use token authentication to add a trust boundary around dashboards, job schedulers, and other control surfaces, but it works best alongside network isolation, strong secrets handling, and least-privilege access.
