Time reference

The baseline a system uses to judge when events occur.

A time reference is the baseline a system uses to decide when events happened. It may come from an internal clock, a network time source, or dedicated timing hardware. Other logs, alerts, and timestamps are measured against that baseline, so the reference determines whether recorded events are ordered correctly and whether time-based controls work as intended.

In cyber security, a reliable time reference matters because authentication, log correlation, certificate checks, session expiry, and forensic timelines all depend on accurate time. If the reference drifts, defenders may see confusing log order, failed verification, or gaps in incident reconstruction. Attackers can also abuse weak time handling by desynchronizing systems, hiding activity in mismatched timestamps, or causing monitoring tools to misread event sequences. Strong defenses therefore include authenticated time sources, drift monitoring, and alerts for sudden clock changes.
