Threat classification

The process of identifying what kind of attack is occurring and how to respond.

Threat classification is the process of identifying what kind of cyberattack is underway so defenders can choose the right response. It goes beyond labeling an event as a “breach” and asks whether the activity looks like ransomware, credential theft, data exfiltration, hacktivism, espionage, or another pattern.

This matters because the classification drives action. A financially motivated intrusion may require rapid containment and recovery, while a suspected state-linked campaign may demand deeper forensic analysis, evidence preservation, and prompt notification to authorities. In practice, analysts compare indicators such as tactics, targets, tooling, and impact to classify the threat. Good classification reduces false assumptions, helps prioritize resources, and improves coordination across security, legal, and incident-response teams. Poor classification can delay containment, destroy evidence, or cause defenders to escalate too slowly or too aggressively.
