Thread safety

A program property that prevents shared data from breaking when multiple threads run at once.

Thread safety is a software property that ensures multiple threads can access the same code or shared data without corrupting state, crashing the program, or producing inconsistent results. In practice, it means operations are protected so one thread does not overwrite another thread’s work while they run at the same time.

Cyber security teams care about thread safety because many servers handle concurrent requests. If shared variables, filenames, sessions, or buffers are not protected, attackers may trigger race conditions that cause wrong authorization decisions, data leaks, denial of service, or even code execution in some cases. Defenders look for locks, atomics, message passing, and careful state separation, especially in network services that process control and data operations in parallel. Weak thread safety often shows up in bugs that are hard to reproduce but easy to abuse once understood.
