Third-party tracker

Code or request from a domain other than the site a user is visiting, often used for measurement or profiling.

A third-party tracker is code or a network request that comes from a domain different from the site you are visiting. It is commonly used for analytics, ad measurement, audience profiling, and cross-site identification. The page may look harmless, but the tracker can still collect details such as page visits, device signals, referrer data, and behavior patterns.

In cyber security, third-party trackers matter because they expand the amount of outside code a browser must trust. More external requests mean more privacy risk, more metadata exposure, and a larger attack surface for malicious ads, injected scripts, or compromised ad networks. Defenses such as browser-level filtering, content blockers, and stricter privacy settings try to stop these requests before they load, reducing both tracking and the chance that unwanted third-party content can interfere with the page.
