Thermodynamics

The branch of physics that explains how heat moves and how energy changes form.

Thermodynamics is the branch of physics that describes how heat moves and how energy changes form. In industrial systems, it determines whether a process can produce useful work, remove waste heat, or stay within safe temperature limits. Power plants, servers, batteries, and cooling systems all depend on thermodynamic behavior.

In cyber security, thermodynamics matters because many attacks and defenses depend on accurate physical measurements. If temperature, flow, or pressure sensors are disrupted, operators may misjudge whether equipment is overheating or whether a safety margin is shrinking. In critical infrastructure, manipulated readings can hide a real thermal problem, trigger an unnecessary shutdown, or delay a needed derate. Defenders use validated sensors, redundancy, and anomaly detection to make sure the physical state of the system matches the control-room view.
