Text and Data Mining (TDM) is the automated analysis of digital material to extract patterns, relationships, or statistics. In security and AI operations, that can mean scanning documents, source code, logs, emails, or media to find anomalies, indicators of compromise, duplicated content, or training features. TDM matters because it turns large, messy collections into searchable signals, but it also sits inside legal limits around copyright, database rights, and reserved uses.
In cyber security, defenders use TDM for threat-intelligence correlation, malware classification, phishing detection, and large-scale log analysis. Attackers can use similar techniques to scrape exposed repositories, profile targets, or mine leaked data for credentials and sensitive patterns. For AI builders, the key control points are provenance, opt-out handling, access permissions, and audit logs. If a system ingests protected works or sensitive data without authorization, the technical pipeline can become both a compliance problem and a security risk.
