Tech risk

The chance that technology-related weaknesses affect business operations or strategy.

Tech risk is the chance that weaknesses in technology, such as flawed systems, poor access controls, unreliable vendors, or weak recovery planning, will harm business operations or strategy. It is not only a technical issue: if a system outage stops payments, if a supplier compromise exposes data, or if a backup fails during ransomware recovery, the impact becomes operational and financial.

In cyber security, tech risk matters because attackers often exploit the same gaps defenders must manage: unpatched software, exposed services, unsafe dependencies, and slow incident response. Good defense reduces tech risk through asset visibility, patching, segmentation, resilient backups, vendor review, and clear risk reporting that translates technical exposure into business impact. The goal is not to eliminate all risk, but to understand what could fail, how badly, and how quickly the organization can recover.
