Task list

A written list of items to do, often ordered by priority or deadline.

A task list is a written queue of items to complete, often sorted by priority, due date, or workflow stage. In cyber security, task lists are used to track alerts, patching work, incident-response steps, and follow-up actions after a review. They help teams avoid missing important work when many events happen at once, especially in a security operations center where attention is limited and decisions need to be recorded clearly.

Task lists also matter during attacks. Adversaries may keep checklists to organize phishing steps, credential use, persistence actions, or cleanup tasks. Defenders look for these lists in ticketing systems, notebooks, chat logs, or operator notes because they can reveal planning, coordination gaps, or unfinished actions. A good task list reduces mistakes, but a bad one can expose priorities and make activity easier to trace.
