Task decomposition is the practice of breaking a larger job into smaller, clearly defined steps. In security and automation work, this helps teams decide which steps can be safely automated, which need human review, and where approval or logging must be enforced. It is a core method for designing AI agents, workflows, and defenses because not every part of a process carries the same risk.
In cyber security, decomposition is useful for mapping attack paths and for building controls around them. Defenders can split a workflow into requests, identity checks, permission changes, and final execution, then apply least privilege and audit trails at each stage. Attackers also benefit from complex workflows that are not well decomposed, because a weak step or overbroad connector can become the easiest entry point. Good decomposition makes it easier to spot where automation is safe, where sensitive decisions should stay human-led, and where policy must block dangerous actions.
