Target resolution is the process of mapping a label, name, or identifier to a specific host, account, domain, or service. In security systems, this is the step that turns an abstract reference such as a username, tenant name, or test label into a real destination that software can contact or control.
It matters because mistakes at this layer can redirect activity to the wrong system. In attacks, adversaries may abuse confusing names, lookalike domains, or poisoned identifiers to steer tools toward an unintended target. In defenses, teams reduce this risk with deterministic IDs, strict allowlists, and hard separation between test and production environments. For agentic AI and automation, target resolution is especially sensitive: if the runtime maps a natural-language label incorrectly, a harmless evaluation can become an action against a live service.
