Takeover request

A prompt telling a human operator to resume control immediately.

A takeover request is an alert that tells a human operator to resume control immediately because an automated system can no longer manage the task safely. In assisted-driving, robotics, and industrial systems, it is the handoff signal from machine to person: the software has reached its operating limit, detected uncertainty, or entered a fault state, and the human must intervene without delay.

In cyber security, takeover requests matter because they sit at the boundary between automation and human judgment. If the message is delayed, unclear, spoofed, or ignored, a small technical problem can become a safety or availability incident. Defenders design these prompts to be hard to miss, redundant across channels, and tied to fail-safe behavior. Attackers may try to suppress alarms, flood operators with false prompts, or manipulate conditions so the human receives too little time to react. Reliable takeover requests help preserve control when software confidence drops.
