SYSTEM, also called LocalSystem, is one of the most privileged security contexts on Windows. Processes running under this account can access many operating-system resources, manage services, and interact with protected parts of the machine that ordinary users cannot reach.
It matters because attackers often try to move from a limited user or service account to SYSTEM to gain full local control. That step is a classic privilege-escalation goal in Windows attacks, especially when a flaw in trusted software or a service lets attacker-controlled code inherit elevated rights. Defenders watch for unexpected SYSTEM processes, service abuse, and privilege-escalation bugs in endpoint tools, since compromise at this level can turn a local foothold into broad administrative power.
